DADGAD tuning guitar lessons for traditional Irish music

This is mainly for people who would like to take their guitar to a traditional music session to accompany the fiddles, flutes and boxes, though we can learn some songs in this tuning too, if that’s what you’d like.

The jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas etc, played at sessions are all dance tunes, so rhythm, rhythm, rhythm is all-important.  For a guitar player, the beat that gets the toes moving is all in the right hand, obviously chords are important, but playing a wrong chord won’t disturb the flow of the session, getting the rhythm wrong will destroy it completely.  I play the whistle a bit so we can spend loads of time playing together, you accompanying me, until the different rhythms start to sink in.

The courses run all year, are a week long, Monday to Friday, tuition will be from 10am till midday and there will never be more than three people on a course. Afternoons are free and there is plenty of music around Kenmare in the evenings.  The cost is 300 Euro per person.
